4-days-A-Journey-through-the-Simian-Mountains
A Journey through the Simien Mountains
This extensive trek explores in depth one of Africa’s largest mountain ranges, studded with at least a dozen peaks over the 4,000 m mark. These include Ras Dejen, the highest point in Ethiopia and the 4th highest peak in Africa. The area was designated a national park in 1966, and the entire range became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978.
Trek through the Simien Mountains, following an extensive network of trails. The quality of these trails, along with the fantastic scenery, unique flora, diverse wildlife and rich birdlife make this a rewarding and challenging adventure. It is a paradise for natural history enthusiasts as well as for trekkers.
Day 1: Gondar — Sankaber (3,250 m)
Drive 100 km (approx. 2 hrs) from Gondar to Debark, the park headquarters, to arrange permits and meet your scout. Continue an hour by vehicle before starting the trek. This gentle hike along the escarpment offers superb viewpoints across the foothills and northern Ethiopian plains. Gelada baboons are commonly seen here.
Day 2: Sankaber — Gich (3,600 m)
Follow the escarpment eastward, descending into the Kaba Valley before climbing towards Gich Abyss. Cross a narrow ridge to dramatic cliffs overlooking the Simien foothills. See the Jinbar Waterfall plunging 530 m into the abyss. Lunch by the Jinbar River, then continue to Gich camp, excellent for spotting lammergeyer and thick‑billed ravens.
Day 3: Gich — Chennek (3,600 m)
Traverse Giant Lobelia fields to reach the towering cliffs of Imet‑Gogo (3,926 m). Descend into the Jinbahir Valley for striking perspectives of the volcanic escarpments. Ascend to a summit of 4,070 m for lunch, before descending steeply to Chennek camp. Enjoy sweeping views in all directions and look for the rare Walia Ibex near camp.
Day 4: Chennek — Buwahit (4,430 m)
Climb Buwahit, the Simien’s second‑highest peak, with panoramic views of Ras‑Dejen (4,543 m), Ethiopia’s highest. Spot endemic Walia Ibex and enjoy the breathtaking highland scenery. Descend back to Chennek camp, then meet your vehicle for the 5‑hour drive back to Gondar.
