Overview
Embark on a breathtaking five-day trek through the Simien Mountains — one of Africa’s most spectacular and dramatic mountain ranges. Home to over a dozen peaks above 4,000 meters, including Ras Dejen (the highest point in Ethiopia and the 4th tallest in Africa), this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers unforgettable scenery, unique wildlife, and rich cultural encounters.
The Trek
Our journey follows a well-established network of trails that weave through rugged cliffs, deep valleys, and open plateaus. Along the way, trekkers will experience the region’s rare flora, fascinating fauna, and abundant birdlife — making this expedition both a naturalist’s paradise and a rewarding adventure for outdoor enthusiasts.
Day 1: Gondar → Sankaber (3,250 m) | 3–4 hours
Depart early from Gondar for the park headquarters in Debark (about 2 hours by car). After securing permits and meeting our local scout, we drive another hour to the trailhead. Our introductory hike offers gentle terrain with sweeping views of the northern escarpment and the foothills below — a perfect start to spot the endemic Gelada baboons.
Day 2: Sankaber → Gich (3,600 m) | 5–6 hours
We trek eastward along the escarpment, descending briefly into the Kaba Valley before climbing toward the Gich Abyss. Here, the Jinbar River cascades 530 meters into the depths below — one of the park’s most awe-inspiring sights. After a scenic riverside lunch, we continue to Gich Camp, where lammergeyers and thick-billed ravens often soar overhead.
Day 3: Gich Exploration (3,600 m) | 5–6 hours
Today’s circular trek takes us to three of the park’s most striking viewpoints. We begin with a walk through fields of giant lobelia toward Imet Gogo (3,926 m), offering sweeping vistas over deep valleys and distant domes. After visiting Seha viewpoint and returning for lunch, we’ll enjoy a relaxed afternoon before hiking to Kedadit for a mesmerizing sunset. Overnight at Gich Camp.
Day 4: Gich → Chennek (3,600 m) | 7–8 hours
Leaving Gich behind, we descend into the Jinbahir Valley and climb towards a 4,070-meter summit for lunch. The path follows the escarpment edge, offering dramatic vertical drops and panoramic views. We then descend to Chennek Camp — one of the best spots to see the Walia Ibex. As the sun sets, keep your eyes peeled; these majestic mountain goats often graze near the campsite.
Day 5: Chennek → Buwahit (4,430 m) → Gondar | 5–6 hours
Today we ascend Buwahit, the second-highest peak in the Simien range. From its summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Ras Dejen and a high chance of spotting Walia Ibex in their natural habitat. After descending to Chennek, we drive back to Gondar (approx. 5 hours), marking the end of an unforgettable adventure in the highlands of Ethiopia.
