8 Days Bale Mountains Expedition from Addis Ababa
Your journey begins early in the morning from Addis Ababa, heading south through the Great Rift Valley. Along the way, you’ll pass by fertile farmlands and scenic lakes, stopping at Lake Ziway to spot pelicans and other water birds. After lunch in Shashamane, continue to Dinsho, the headquarters of the Bale Mountains National Park. In the afternoon, take a gentle walk around the park to see Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck, and Warthogs grazing peacefully. You’ll spend the night at Dinsho Lodge or camp under the highland stars.
After breakfast, enjoy an early morning walk across the Gaysay Grasslands, one of the park’s best wildlife-viewing spots. Watch herds of mountain nyala and warthogs roaming freely, surrounded by colorful wildflowers and birds. Later, drive through breathtaking highland scenery to Rira village, nestled deep within the Harenna Forest. On arrival, meet the local community and learn about their harmony with nature and traditional honey harvesting. Overnight at Rira Community Lodge or camping.
Today is devoted to exploring the magical Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s last remaining natural cloud forests. As you walk under towering bamboo and moss-draped trees, you might spot colobus monkeys, giant forest hogs, and a variety of endemic birds. The forest is also known for its wild coffee, which grows naturally in the shade of old trees. You’ll visit a local coffee farmer, learn about traditional forest coffee cultivation, and enjoy a freshly brewed cup in the heart of the forest. Overnight again in Rira.
After breakfast, ascend gradually to the Sanetti Plateau, one of Africa’s highest and most spectacular alpine regions. Rising above 4,000 meters, the plateau is often blanketed with mist, creating a dreamlike landscape. This is the best place to see the Ethiopian Wolf, the world’s rarest canid, as it hunts the endemic giant mole rats. You’ll also visit Tulu Dimtu (4,377 m), Ethiopia’s second-highest peak, before descending to Goba for the night at Wabe Shebelle Hotel or local lodge.
Today, drive southeast to the legendary Sof Omar Caves, about 100 km from Goba. The caves are among the largest underground systems in Africa, carved by the Weyb River. You’ll explore its stunning limestone chambers and natural cathedrals, learning about their deep cultural and spiritual significance to the local people. After the exploration, return to Goba for a relaxing evening and overnight stay.
After breakfast, travel toward Katcha village and the nearby Angetu Forest, an untouched paradise of tall trees and endemic flora. Enjoy a peaceful nature walk through the forest, which is a haven for rare birds and medicinal plants. Visit a nearby village to experience traditional Oromo hospitality and the Ethiopian coffee ceremony, a warm and aromatic cultural ritual. Spend the night camping or in a small community lodge surrounded by the sounds of nature.
This morning, begin your descent from the Bale highlands toward the Rift Valley. The drive passes through farmlands and small towns before reaching Lake Langano, a popular resort area known for its brown-colored, mineral-rich waters safe for swimming. After lunch, relax by the lake or take a birdwatching stroll. In the evening, enjoy the tranquil sunset over the water. Overnight at Sabana Beach Resort or similar lakeside lodge.
Enjoy a relaxed breakfast by the lakeshore before driving back to Addis Ababa. On the way, you may stop at local craft markets to buy souvenirs or visit a fruit stall for fresh Rift Valley produce. Arriving in the capital by late afternoon, conclude your journey with a farewell Ethiopian traditional dinner and cultural dance show, celebrating the end of a memorable Bale Mountains adventure.
